- Subject: 210XL Bearcat Scanner to read 1012Mhz?
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I am posting on behalf of my father, a retired
- news photographer who was out there in the action
- almost every day. Since retirement, most of the
- "action" he has experienced has been through
- shortwave (and scanner) monitoring. He has listened to
- the local police dept for years on 154Mhz. Now the
- city hall has purchased 900Mhz equipment and have left
- him in the dark.
-
- Rather than buying a new scanner, my father is wondering
- if there is a converter that will double the upper-end
- frequency capability of his 210XL Bearcat Scanner from
- 512Mhz to 1012Mhz. Has anyone run across one?
-
- Thanks for your help,
-
- Jim

- SYNOPSIS OF ACTIVITY
- --------------------
-
- Solar activity was low due to a single C1 flare at
- 22/1034Z from an unknown source. The delta configuration in
- Region 7618 (N07W59) faded. Region 7622 (N13E17) showed itself
- as a small D-class group. Region 7620 (N05E17) stabilized as a
- small D-class group.
-
- Solar activity forecast: solar activity should be mostly
- low. An isolated M-class flare remains possible from Region
- 7618 and to a lesser degree from Region 7622.
-
- STD: Moderate Ca XV emissions and strong Fe XIV and Fe X
- emissions were associated with the passage of Region 7622 onto
- the disk over the weekend. Associated coronal plots and maps
- are available through anonymous ftp at: ftp.uleth.ca in the
- directories "pub/solar/Corona/Scans" and "pub/solar/Corona/Maps".
- A full-disk Yohkoh x-ray image has been appended to this
- report, taken at approximately 03:10 UTC on 22 November.
-
- The geomagnetic field remained quiet.
-
- Geophysical activity forecast: the geomagnetic field
- should become generally active on 23 Nov due to a favorably
- positioned coronal hole. This disturbance is expected to
- continue into the early hours of 24 Nov. Generally unsettled
- conditions are forecast for the remainder of 24 Nov and all
- of 25 Nov.
-
- Event probabilities 23 nov-25 nov
-
- Class M 25/25/25
- Class X 05/05/05
- Proton 05/05/05
- PCAF Green

-
- B. High Latitudes
- Active 40/35/30
- Minor Storm 20/20/10
- Major-Severe Storm 10/05/01
-
- HF propagation conditions were normal over all regions.
- Minor signal degradation is expected over transpolar and
- transauroral paths over the next 24 hours. Conditions should
- return to near-normal by 25 November.

-
- I highly doubt the SO is going to care what the ARRL thinks. Reading
- the posts about this topic I didn't observe that the problem was
- between the ham and the SO; the friction is between the ham and the
- FCC. The ham was given the choice to hand over his HT to the local RACES
- group or to receive the NAL; if he had chose he could have appeared
- before the FCC to appeal. But again, this is between him and the FCC.
- If the ARRL were to get involved in defending hams to the FCC your
- membership dues would be 10X what they currently are. {There was
- an article from the ARRL many months ago discussing this very topic -
- quite a bit of their budget goes for legal defense as I recall -
- someone please amplify this.}
-
- Now, it was asked if the ARRL ever does anything useful and I suggested
- one study the history of ham radio - that means from day one up through
- yesterday. No one would have the time to list everything the ARRL has
- done for our hobby, so you'll have to look for yourself.
-
- This is not a new hobby. What has occured before us has set the stage
- for where we are today. But I realize that a young ham of today
- would think [s]he has nothing to gain from doing a bit of historical
- reading; much easier to tap on one's keyboard and complain.

- I know two people in the area who have NIR-10's and they love them. In one case

-
- As far as pile-ups go, nothing is going to help that, the human brain is still the
- best filter. Some types of noise will fool the unit.
-
- The noise has to display some non-randomness to it so the unit can lock on and
- "filter" it out. I put filter in quote marks because the DSP unit
- gets rid of the noise by a mathematical process of inversion.

- Yes, rec.radio.amateur.packet was obsoleted. The new, replacment
- group at the moment is rec.radio.digital.misc. In not too many months,
- there will be a vote to create a few more groups in the digital hierarchy,

- Hello,
- I am rather on the young side (23) but from working in radio this is
- what I got. The Triangles are from the CIVIL DEFENSE and according to the
- Civil Defense paperwork that I read after all of the stations would receive the
- 2 tone EBS alert and hook up to the system the president or governor wuld give
- an announcement and then all stations (AM) were to go off the air EXCEPT for
- those having a frequency assignment of 1240 and 640 khz. The signs were placed
- on radios so that everybody would know where to tune if all other stations
- couldn't be received. That AM station south of us was 1240 and they had the
- luxury of constantly receiving backup transmitters (3!) and generators that
- could run off of diesel or natural gas or..... (you get the picture). Just a
- efficent network that was left over from the cold war and bomb shelters.

- Well, I guess our definitions aren't too much different
- since yours also refers to "...words, forms, and patterns
- of sounds..." hmmmm sort of could fit the bill also
- for CW (excuse me, you don't like that, Morse Code.)
-
- I don't know what your experience with CW has been,
- but I image a negative one from all your anti-Morse-Code
- postings.
-
- No matter what you, I or anyone else thinks....the CW
- requirement is with us by International Treaty, and
- I don't think any of us will be around if they decide
- to drop it. (And no, I'm not an OF by any means, I'm
- not even close to the ARRL "average" age yet.).
-
- The FCC has made a place for Code/No-Code Amateurs alike.
- Since most of the posts I have read about "No Coders"
- being the Future of Ham radio, and will advance Amateur
- Radio more than the Amateurs of the past, they have
- 6 meters on up to do it with. For the CW bunch we have
- our HF frequencies to ragchew with each other in our
- "out moded, dying, antique (did I leave any out)"
- Morse Code. And, if we pass a bit of traffic, help
- out with the occassional SOS, H&W Traffic, CW training,
- etc. etc. for others.....we won't let that get in
- anyones way.
-
- You, Gary want code to go away or I believe give away
- the little HF we have to turn it into 11 meters. I
- don't think you'll be seeing it too soon.....
